This is a little deceiving as I did very minimal Halloween-sque activities. However, this is truly one of my favorite times of the year, for several reasons.
One, Halloween movies are my favorite category of "holiday" movies, beats Christmas for sure. Two, I get to whip out my leather jackets [in Minnesota it was early October then there was a shift to winter jackets, in Texas it's a shift from tank tops and shorts to jeans and jackets in late October]. Three, it becomes appropriate to be sipping hot tea [don't get me wrong I drank tea everyday in the 100+ degree, but I understood it was an odd move].
Yes, it is now a couple weeks after Halloween. But the first week after Halloween is pretty much still Halloween to me, you get to eat your Halloween candy and watch an extra movie you didn't get in yet. So, I figured I would wrap up the Halloween season with some of my favorites.
Movie Marathon
Like I said I LOVE Halloween movies. What made the list this season?
Hocus Pocus, it's a classic and if you don't bring this out every fall.... did fall actually happen?
The Scream Franchise. I wish I could say this took me ALL fall to watch, but really it took three days to watch four movies. Not sure if I should be proud of this, but Joy and I just discovered these movies and found them highly entertaining.
Halloweentown. Back to Disney Channel movies. I mean are you a millennial if you didn't watch too many Disney Channel movies during your youth... and then bring them back when ever excusable in your adulting years?
Fun Fact: Marnie and Kal from Halloweentown are dating in real life! You are are welcome for bring this to your attention.
IT. The new one. Got around to watching this and wow was it... good? I mean it was good, but also really F'ed up. When Georgie died in the very first scene, I had to readjust my mindset because that was too much to handle in the first three minutes of a movie. My favorite aspect was Finn Wolfhard who is also in Stranger Things. He plays a great comic relief character in this movie!
Hot Toddy in Bastrop
Joy and I were on a mission to find a pumpkin patch to walk through, as this is a pretty normal Minnesota activity -- although usually it is also an apple orchard. Well, we found one and to be honest we were slightly underwhelmed, also they were selling frozen wine... no cider, mulled wine, or hot chocolate. It felt wrong.
However, instead of heading home we decided to check out downtown Bastrop, a small town outside of Austin. We found a cute winery, then headed to a distillery down a couple blocks. They had an amazing live band and were serving hot drinks. The weather was in the 60s so it was the perfect weather to sip on hot drinks and listen to a band for a couple hours.
Fire on Halloween
Well Halloween wasn't "warm" by any means, but it was still the warmest Halloween I've ever experienced. A neighbor had a fire and invited all the neighbors over to her driveway to pass out candy and also make some s'mores. I have never intentionally sat outside on a Halloween night, the fire was definitely necessary for warmth, but still frostbite wasn't a concern.
Fun Fact: This was also the first Halloween I didn't hear someone talk about The Great 1991 Halloween Blizzard. For those who aren't Minnesotan and don't know of this storm in Duluth, MN the snow was recorded at 37 inches... imagine trick or treating in that.
Walks
This is SO BASIC. I know, but I love going on walks in the fall. Although it isn't as pretty as a Minnesota fall walk [this is one place MN season definitely is better than TX] the air is still crisp [some days, others it is still in the 80s] and there are a handful of leaves on the ground to crunch through.
The best walk was definitely in Luke's hometown. I had a coffee in my hand, great company, and he also challenged me to a maze run in a playground... My overly competitive side had me running through a child's maze three times before allowing our group to continue onward with our walk.
I guess we are now on to Thanksgiving season? Which means a lot of carbs, family, and a bit colder weather [I think].
Advice: Make sure your Halloween candy includes chocolate... it is superior to chewy or sugary candy.
